Horseshoe Crab

By Elise Kang

I walked on the beach
And it gave me a fright
A rock like being
That shines in the light

Stepping away from the thing
I pondered in fear
What would happen
If I came near?

As I came near
Inching towards this rock
I came to learn
What left me in shock

Turns out that it wasn’t
A rock at all
This up-side-down organism
Was just unable to crawl

I approached with care
What is this?
It being unable to move
I helped with a twist

I now understand
This thing that has spikes
That looks like it could stab
Is nothing more
Than a gentle horseshoe crab
