Alphonse Milne Edwards
1835-1900

Alphonse Milne Edwards was the son of Henri Milne Edwards, who was the large name within French zoology during the middle of the 19th century. During the last decade of the 19th century, Alphonse was director of the Paris Natural History Museum and a specialist on (especially deep sea) decapod crustaceans.

Alphonse studied medicine (MD in 1860) and biology (D.Sc. in 1861) and was appointed assisting naturalist at the Paris Museum in 1862. In 1865 he was appointed professor of zoology of the School of Pharmacy in Paris, but succeded his father at the division of Mammalia and Aves at the Museum 11 years later and became eventually director of the museum in 1891.
